  42.   The heart of our service is a special Windows software package that takes
  43.   care of all that. The Pipeline for Windows software lets you browse mail and
  44.   news online or offline, as you prefer. It is both friendly and powerful--
  45.   requiring no instruction manual, and allowing you to carry on activities in
  46.   different windows simultaneously. If you want to read news in one window,
  47.   while playing a game in a second and watching mail drop into your inbox in a
  48.   third, the Pipeline's software is what you are looking for.

  54.   who happen to have Internet access elsewhere can connect with hooked
  55.   remotely and use our graphical interface, with all the special windows

  63.   The Pipeline for Windows's founder is James Gleick, author of "Chaos: Making
  64.   a New Science." He grew obsessed with the Information Age resources he
  65.   encountered on the Internet and at the same time grew frustrated by the
  66.   hurdles that seemed to exist for normal, interested, non-university,
  67.   non-Unix-speaking and generally non-U individuals like himself.

  69.   Its chief programmer, and resident genius, is Uday Ivatury,
  70.   a Bombay native who cut his teeth on (and survived) the world of IBM
  71.   mainframes. He has set himself a formidable challenge with Pipeline for
  72.   Windows: a joining of the seemingly alien cultures of Unix work stations
  73.   and DOS or Apple personal computers.

  75.   The hooked space itself lies--in geographical space--inside powerful
  76.   Pentium systems situated in the midst of the SOMA in San Francisco.

  90.   standard for easy, friendly on-line communication. Yet it is also
  91.   extremely powerful, using the capabilities of Windows in ways that no
  92.   other on-line service has tried to do.

  107.   -- Mail. New mail automatically drops into the Inbox as it arrives (or
  108.   when the user logs in). Users may create and manage other mail folders.
  109.   There is a built-in address book.

  111.   -- News. A point-and-click news reader smooths the process of finding your
  112.   way through 8,000+ Usenet news groups. It is easily customizable.  While
  113.   on line, you may browse freely. Or, while off line, you may select threads
  114.   for quick retrieval and later reading.

  116.   -- Gopher. For exploring the Internet, Pipeline features a superset of
  117.   Gopher. Documents appear in their own windows for reading, editing, or
  118.   printing. Pictures display automatically and can be panned and zoomed as
  119.   well as saved and printed. Users can easily customize menu items and icons
  120.   with their favorite Internet resources.

  122.   -- Telnet sessions. Anything that can be done from a standard terminal can
  123.   be done in a window with hooked: that means connecting directly to any
  124.   place on the Internet. If the user wishes, it's easy to change fonts,
  125.   colors, or the terminal emulation.

  127.   -- Database searching and file finding. The hooked interface comes with
  128.   its own implementations of Archie, FTP, and WAIS, with simple
  129.   user-friendly dialogs to shield users from the technical complexities.

  131.   Pink Slip (tm)
  132.   --------------
  133.   A technical note for Internet experts: The reason the software is unique
  134.   lies in its ability to transparently multitask many different windows
  135.   (sessions, in effect). We have implemented our own proprietary
  136.   packet-transfer protocol--called Pink Slip--to intelligently manage
  137.   multiple data streams over an ordinary modem connection.
  138.  
  139.   For the user, the process is transparent: he or she never sees or knows
  140.   about Pink Slip. But it is always working behind the scenes. When the user
  141.   is downloading a large file, for example, Pink Slip automatically adjusts
  142.   the speed of the transfer--the priority given to individual
  143.   packets--depending on what else the user is doing. If the user is reading
  144.   or replying to mail or News, the background transfer is fast. If new mail
  145.   arrives, or the user opens a new window and begins playing a game, those
  146.   data streams take priority and push the file transfer into the background.

  151.   the Pipeline's special software. There are no setup or other "extra" charges.
